Squaw Valley

Carving Clinic & Competition

Feb 10 (Fri): SKILLS clinic for those not racing (9:30am-noon) NEW!

Thurs Feb 9. SKI CLINICS for all levels will focus on carving turns. Sign-up via this RSVP Form. Ever dream of that perfect carved turn? This is the clinic for you! Sign in 8:30-9:15; clinics begin promptly at 9:30 and run til noon. Wear your arm band: Sr lift ticket $10 (70+ free) at the ticket counter. Clinic cost covered by your membership. Clinic charge to guests, $25 per day (Recall our guest policy: 2 days maximum for same guest for the entire season). To confirm your RSVP, check the sign-up list below.

On Friday, Feb 10, you can either show what you've learned in the CARVING CUP RACE *OR* take the skills clinic we've added overlapping the Carving Competition (9:30-noon). Sign in 8:20-8:50 (for either activity). Carving turn clinic and practice with your clinic instructor from 9 to 10 am. Carving Cup competition to begin ~10:15. Sign up for the clinic practice and the carving cup. The course will be set at a level all can handle, but it is OK to come for the first hour and not race, if you wish. Wear your arm band: Sr lift ticket $10 (70+ free) at the ticket counter. Clinic and race cost covered by your membership.

NOTE: the club requires race participants wear helmets.

    What is a Carving Cup Race? An easy course is set up with 3 brushes or buoys marking each turn site. The skier selects the brush to turn around (near fall line, midway or wide). A skier's carving skill is awarded points on each turn (fewer for near the fall line, most for turning around the widest position); his/her total course skill score is then divided by time on the course for an overall score. Plan your strategy! -- more difficult turns with slower speed can win over a faster skier who races down the turns near the fall line.

Potluck and Carving Awards

Whether or not you attended the ski clinic and carving cup event, sign-up for the Potluck set for Friday, 6pm. RSVP, indicating your dish to share, using this RSVP form. Note: all those wanting to go to the potluck MUST sign up ahead to ensure we have plenty of food! Winners for the Carving Cup will be announced at the potluck.
